Free Teleprompter App for Presentations: What Free Actually Covers

You have a presentation coming up and you want your words in front of you without spending money on a tool you might use once. Here is what a free teleprompter app needs to do for a live talk, the limits to check before you rely on one, and when paying is actually worth it.

The short answer

Yes, you can present with a free teleprompter app. For a live presentation, check that the free plan covers the parts you will use on the day: a script that follows your voice (not a fixed scroll speed), your own slides, and a private screen for your script while the audience sees only the slides. Aitho's Free plan is $0 with no card and includes the voice-following script, your own PDF or PowerPoint, the browser, iPhone and Android apps, spoken slide commands, and three private answers to try. You only need Pro ($39 a month) if you want unlimited help with audience questions or AI script drafts from your slides.

What a presentation needs from a free teleprompter

Many teleprompter apps are designed for recording video: one person, one camera, one script that scrolls. A live presentation asks for more. You have slides that need to change at the right moment, an audience that should never see your script, and pauses, questions and detours that a fixed scroll speed cannot handle.

So before you compare free plans, write down what your talk actually involves. If you are recording a short video to camera, almost any free scrolling prompter will do. If you are presenting slides to a room or on a call, the free plan has to cover four things:

  • Voice-following. The script moves with your speech, waits when you pause, and catches up if you skip a line. A fixed scroll speed is the usual reason a prompter feels stressful.
  • Your own slides. Your script is tied to your deck, so you are not keeping two timelines in your head, one for the scroll and one for the clicker.
  • A private presenter screen. Your script stays on your laptop or phone. The projector or the shared window shows only slides.
  • Your devices. It runs on what you will actually present from, whether that is a browser, a phone or both.
A free plan is only free if it covers the talk you are actually giving.

Where free plans usually stop

Free tiers differ a lot from one app to the next, and they change. Rather than trust a feature list, check these limits on the app's own pricing page before you build your talk around it:

  • Whether voice-following is included in free, or only a manual or fixed-speed scroll
  • How many scripts or presentations the free plan lets you keep
  • Whether you can import your own slides, or only paste text
  • Whether a card is required to start, and what happens when a trial ends
  • Which devices the free plan works on

If any of those limits would bite on the day of your talk, you want to find out during a rehearsal, not in front of the room.

What Aitho's Free plan includes

Aitho is a teleprompter built for presenting slides. The Free plan costs $0 and does not need a card. It includes:

  • The voice-following script: your place is highlighted as you speak, and it catches up if you skip ahead or circle back
  • Your own PDF or PowerPoint, or the sample talk in every new account (Keynote and Google Slides decks export to PDF first)
  • Slides that advance when you reach each slide's words, plus spoken commands like "next slide" and "go to slide 3"
  • The browser, the iPhone app and the Android app
  • Three private answers to try: when a question comes, an answer drawn from your own slides and documents appears on your screen only. The three are a one-time allowance, not monthly.

Your script stays in your private Presenter View. The audience sees a slides-only Audience Stage, which you can share on Zoom, Teams or Meet, or open on the room's computer at aitho.app/cast with your talk's 6-digit code.

When paying makes sense

For many people, Free covers the whole talk. Paying is worth it when the questions after the talk matter as much as the talk itself, or when you want help writing the script.

  • Pro, $39 a month ($390 a year): unlimited private answers from your own deck and documents, 300 web lookups a month for questions your material does not cover, and AI script drafts from your slides.
  • Presenter Pro, $79 a month ($790 a year): everything in Pro, plus unlimited web lookups, a readiness check before you go on, interview, podcast and teacher modes, and connections to AI assistants.

Paid plans can be cancelled at any time and keep working until the end of the period you paid for. Full details are on the pricing page.

How to test a free teleprompter with your real talk

Fifteen minutes with your actual material tells you more than any comparison table:

  • Load the deck and script for your next talk, not a sample.
  • Read the first two minutes out loud at the pace you use when you are nervous, which is usually faster than in rehearsal.
  • Pause for five seconds, then skip a sentence. Watch whether the script waits and then finds you.
  • Set up the screen the audience will see, on a test call or the room display, and confirm your script is not on it.
  • If questions are part of your talk, say three likely questions out loud and see what help you get.

If your talk is judged or has rules about assistance, such as a pitch competition or a defense, check those rules first. Rehearsing with a teleprompter is always fine.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a credit card to use Aitho for free?

No. The Free plan is $0 and does not need a card. You can bring your own PDF or PowerPoint or use the sample talk.

Is voice-following included in the free plan?

Yes. In Aitho, the script that follows your voice and the slides that advance as you speak are included in Free, along with spoken slide commands.

Are the three free private answers per month?

No. The three private answers are a one-time allowance to try the question help. Pro includes unlimited answers from your own deck and documents.

Can I use a free teleprompter app on my phone?

Aitho's Free plan works in the browser, in the iPhone app and in the Android app, with the same account. You can keep the script on the phone and put the slides on the room screen through aitho.app/cast.

Does it work without internet?

In the iPhone and iPad app, following your script works offline. In the browser and on Android it needs a connection, and so do the room screen and answers to audience questions.
